USA Ugandans Reject Dictator Museveni as a President of Uganda   05/30/2016

Diaspora Ugandans in the U.S. demonstrated in Washington, D.C., today at the Ugandan Embassy, the Department of State and the White House.

They delivered the following petition addressed to President Obama and to Secretary of State John Kerry:

"We Ugandans; who live in the USA as nationals and citizens of this greatest democracy on earth, hereby protest the dictatorial tendencies of Yoweri Museveni:

The 30 year old- [regime] veteran President.  Following the Presidential elections of February 2016 the Ugandan voters elected Dr. Kiiza Besigye as their president but Museveni forcefully, dubiously and brazenly selected himself as the victor.

Mr. Museveni openly tinkered with the electoral process, proceeded to restrain movements of Dr. Besigye by putting him under a quasi house arrest, and heavily deployed security forces in the capital city and major towns of Uganda to quell any complaints and resultant protests of his blatant theft of the election.

We also note with dismay that while another major electoral contestant has referred electoral malpractices to the Ugandan judiciary, Mr. Museveni and his government are actively engaged in a scheme to severally undermine the judicial process.

We agree with the remarks of President Barack Obama, who intimated on his visit to Africa that “Africa does not need strong leaders, it needs strong institutions”, and that “No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery”.

Accordingly therefore, We Ugandans in USA wish to register extreme disappointment and frustration over the recent shambolic presidential electoral polls that have cast the country in a precarious situation that threatens the peace and tranquility of the country.

We hereby therefore wish to petition the Unites States White House, Congress and Secretary of State thus:

During the electoral process, contestation and participation were greatly stifled. The entire exercise was so unfair that all observers, including the European Union, dismissed it as “far from free and fair”.

Mindful of primacy of the assistance of the people and government of the United States to the people and government of Uganda; in consideration of the level of strategic relations between the two governments; but above all cognizant of the tenets that underlie the foreign policy of the United States, we hereby call upon the US government to seriously consider pressuring the Ugandan rogue leader to:

Desist from interfering with the ongoing court process meant to decide the fairness of the electoral process (including questionable arrests and disappearances of key opposition witnesses).

Audit the results of the just concluded elections, under auspices of an international neutral auditor.

Free all political prisoners and grant freedom of movement and expression to the opposition leaders, whose current freedoms are grossly limited and curtailed.

Account for the missing persons who have been abducted by the government during the Presidential campaign and electoral season.

Meanwhile, we suggest that in the interim, the US government:

Do not recognize the electoral results and the resultant government of Yoweri Museveni; and,

Immediately freeze all assistance, barring relief and emergency aid, to the government of Uganda.

Place targeted sanctions upon the regime and its functionaries, including the Uganda Electoral Commission.

Immediately implement a travel ban to the USA upon all members of the NRM government and their families, including the President.

Help to persuade all development partners to intervene in a similar way.

Once again, we reiterate that your assistance to the government of Uganda is so primary that its immediate cessation, although it could hurt the people of Uganda in the interim, will surely force positive action from this increasingly intransigent leader and his rogue administration.

The Ugandan community in the US takes this opportunity to renew assurances of their highest consideration to the White House, Congress and Office of the Secretary of State of the United States of America.

We remain hopeful that the government and people of the US will lend a hand in this trying time of the assault upon our democracy and freedom by one of Africa’s most dangerous dictator who has lorded over Uganda for 30 years."

On behalf of the Ugandan Community in the USA
